Frequently Asked Questions - Recuperation

How long will I be in the hospital?

This depends on your general health status aside from heart disease. Otherwise healthy individuals may be discharged 3-5 days after surgery. Smoking, obesity, and irregular heart rhythms are some of the factors which may necessitate longer hospital stays.

What is the normal recuperation period?

Usually, you will need 6-8 weeks after your discharge to recuperate from your open heart surgery.

When can I drive?

Generally, 3-4 weeks following discharge, if approved by your cardiologist or surgeon. Prior to that time, you may be a passenger for short trips. Please DO wear your seat belts.

How active should I be?

You are encouraged to walk as tolerated during your recuperation gradually increasing the time and distance. Take care to avoid anything that may cause you to fall. Many people find Mall walking enjoyable in inclement weather.

What about Cardiac Rehab?

We encourage our patients to participate in a cardiac rehabilitation program as it helps to expedite the return to your normal lifestyle; however, this is not mandatory.
